When to walk Old Louisville

There is no bad month for these streets, only different ones. Spring brings blossom and summer brings free Shakespeare in the park. Fall draws the crowds, while winter strips the trees so the houses show their full faces. This guide goes through the year first and then through the hours of the day.

The walks run all year

You will rarely find Old Louisville without a tour. The history and architecture walk at ~$26.50 leaves daily at 11 am, and Viator has shown an extra 1 pm slot on some days. The Visitors Center walk from ~$20 usually runs at 11 am and 1:30 pm, though some weekdays have no departure at all. The evening ghost walk from ~$25 goes out nightly, most often at 7:30 pm. Viator also lists 6:00 pm and 9:15 pm departures.

Two small exceptions. One of the operator's own listings mentions fewer dates in the off-season, so check the winter calendar before you build a trip around a walk. And Thanksgiving Day had no departures on the history walk when we compared them.

Spring, from redbuds to Derby week

April and May are the prettiest months for gardens. Redbuds and azaleas flower against the red brick while the courts turn green again, and the mild air makes a long morning on foot easy.

The one week to plan around is Derby week. The Kentucky Derby runs on the first Saturday in May, and hotels across Louisville fill up and raise their rates in the days before it. The walks carry on as usual. If your dates can move, a week either side is far kinder to the budget, and you will share the courts with fewer people.

Summer heat and free Shakespeare

June to August brings sticky heat, with afternoons in the upper 80s °F (about 31 °C). Pick the 11 am walk over an afternoon start. Wear a hat and carry water, because the history walk has no refreshment stop and its listing tells you to bring your own. The Visitors Center walk hands out bottled water and a hand fan. The history walk pauses in the shade where it can, and the tree cover on the side streets helps more than you would expect.

Summer evenings have a bonus. On summer evenings Central Park turns into an open-air theater for the free Kentucky Shakespeare Festival, which runs for about eleven weeks from roughly June to August at the C. Douglas Ramey Amphitheater. The festival bills itself as the longest-running Shakespeare festival in the US that charges no admission. A morning walk followed by an evening play makes a fine Old Louisville day, and what to see after your walk fills the hours between.

Fall, the favorite

September and October are when most people would choose to come. The heat breaks and the trees turn just as the neighborhood's Halloween reputation peaks. Evening ghost walks sell out in late October, on Halloween night above all, so reserve as soon as your dates are firm. Old Louisville ghost walks, explained describes what the evening walk covers.

The first full weekend of October usually belongs to the St. James Court Art Show, a big juried show of fine art and craft spread over the streets around the court. It is free and lively, with hundreds of artists. The flip side is that the courts are packed with stalls and the houses disappear behind tents. Parking gets hard and walks move slowly. Come for the show, or come the weekend after for the houses. If you drive in during the fair, read our parking advice first.

October nights go first

The Louisville Historic Tours ghost walk (from ~$25) mixes neighborhood history with the lore from David Dominé's books. GetYourGuide lets you pay later and cancel without charge until 24 hours before, which helps while plans are still moving. Viator charges about $29 and does not refund.

Winter, when the facades show

Visitors overlook November, and they should not. Bare branches reveal the towers and carved stone that the canopy hid all summer. The streets are quiet too. If you want to study the buildings, how to read a Victorian facade is easier to put into practice in late fall than in July.

December brings wreaths and lit-up porches. The Visitors Center promotes a Holiday Home Tour in early December, when owners open their decorated private homes, a rare chance to see inside. Dates move about, so check with the Visitors Center directly. Pack warm layers, since winter highs sit around the low 40s °F (about 5–6 °C).

Daylight and the evening walk

The hour of sunset changes the ghost walk more than anything else. In late June the sun goes down at about 9:05 pm, so a 7:30 pm departure spends most of its time in daylight. In December sunset comes at about 5:25 pm, and the same walk happens in full dark. That suits the stories but hides the houses. The old sidewalks are harder to see too, so a small flashlight helps.

If you want ghost stories with the houses in view on a winter trip, the private haunted walk from ~$75 can be booked in daylight for a group of up to 15. Only 2 travelers have reviewed it so far, and each extra guest raises the price. History by day or ghosts by night? sets the morning and evening walks against each other for different kinds of travelers.

Rain and refunds

Both operators walk in most weather, and a light drizzle on gaslit brick has its fans. Where you book matters more than the forecast. Louisville Historic Tours offers a new date or a refund only when it cancels a walk itself, and its walks booked through Viator are otherwise non-refundable. The same walks on GetYourGuide carry free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead, as does the Visitors Center walk on Viator. In a showery month, or with small children whose plans can change by the hour, take the flexible option. Our page for families and wheelchair users covers the rest.

Month by month

Timing questions before you book

What is the best month to visit Old Louisville?

September and October bring mild weather and fall color. Blossom peaks in April and May. November is the quiet pick for architecture because the bare trees show the facades in full.

Do Old Louisville walking tours run in winter?

Yes. The history walk is listed daily at 11 am and the ghost walk runs nightly, though one operator listing mentions fewer dates in the off-season. Check the calendar for your dates before you plan around a walk.

Is the 7:30 pm ghost walk in the dark?

It depends on the month. In late June the sun sets around 9:05 pm, so most of the walk is in daylight. In December sunset is about 5:25 pm and the whole walk happens after dark.

What happens to a walking tour if it rains?

The walks usually go ahead in light rain. If Louisville Historic Tours cancels for weather, you get a new date or a refund. Otherwise its Viator bookings are non-refundable, while GetYourGuide allows free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead.

When is the St. James Court Art Show?

Usually on the first full weekend of October. It is free and very busy. Expect crowded courts and harder parking that weekend.
